一般的，形容词比较级前不用冠词，但当形容词比较级之后有of the two，则其前必须加定冠词the

He is the taller of the two. 他是两人中较高的。

有时of the two并非直接出现在句中，但可分析出含有of the two的意思，这时也必须用the

Of gold and silver, the former is the more precious. 金银之中，以金为贵。

试比较：

Which is more nourishing, maize or wheat? 玉米和小麦哪个更有营养？

Maize is the more nourishing (of the two). 玉米是（两者中）比较有营养的。

Maize is more nourishing than wheat. 玉米比小麦更有营养。

当比较级形容词后跟有一个单数名词时，前需加不定冠词a(n)

Iron is a more useful metal than gold. 铁是比黄金更为有用的金属。
