1.作主语
Both of the brothers are honest.
All of my friends do not smoke.
2.作宾语或同位语
Mother loved both of them/them both.
He visited all of us/us all.
3. 作介词宾语或主语补语
I’m fond of both.

4.用作限定词
Both banks of the river were covered in bushes.
All six boys arrived late.(修饰可数名词)
All my flowers are dead.→My flowers are all dead.
Both my sisters want to go.→My sisters both want to go.
They can both play well.
They’ve all gone to the town.
位于助动词与动词之间。
1.all可修饰不可数名词,而whole不可以。whole修饰单数名词,前面加不定冠词,而all通常在其后用the或省略
The whole bottle was spilt.
2.all一般用于复数可数名词前,也可用于不可数名词前。
All the bottles were broken.
All the ink was spilt.
all后常可直接跟名词复数,一般需用of结构,而whole一般不修饰复数名词
I have read all of the books.
和all连用的单数名词有:all the time, all one’s life, all this noise等
3.all the与the whole of常可通用
All the world/The whole world mourned for his death.
4.all置于物主代词、冠词或其他限定词之前,而whole则置于这些词后
all my life
my whole life
He hasn’t paid it all. (=He has paid some of the money.)
I cannot promote both of you. (=I can promote one of you.)
比较全部否定:
I can promote neither of you.
I cannot promote either of you.
