Clothes是一个没有单数形式的复数名词，不能和数词连用。Clothing不但包括衣服，而且包括帽、袜、手套之类的，相当于汉语的“衣着”。它是一个没有复数形式的不可数名词，汉语的衣食住行译为food, clothing, shelter and transportation。

“一件衣服”不能说a clothes，也不说an article of clothes，而说an article of clothing或a piece of clothing。

“一套衣服”不能说a suit of clothing，而是说a suit of clothes。

若要说“两件上衣”或“两条裤子”，都要用指具体的衣服或裤子的名词，说成two coats/jackets, two pairs of clothing。“男装”通常说men’s clothing/men’s wear，“女装”说成women’s wear/ladies’ wear。

Clothes不和数词连用，但可以说many/these/some clothes，也可以说articles of clothing（指各种服装和衣着用品），但不说articles of clothes。
