1、用来引导状语从句时，可以互换。
No matter what (=whatever) happened, he wouldn’t say a word.
不管发生了什么，他都不会吭声。
2、引导名词性从句时，只能用whatever，而不能用no matter what。
Whatever she did was right.无论她做什么都是对的。
3、用作疑问词以加强语气（意思与what相当）时，只用whatever。
Whatever are they afraid of?他们究竟害怕什么？
从以上例子可以看出，no matter what并不完全等同于whatever，而且由此可得知no matter who/when/where/which/how与who/when/where/which/how-ever之间的同和异。
<1>Wherever (=No matter where) he is, he will be thinking of you.无论他到哪儿，他总会想到你。
<2>Whoever leaves the room last ought to turn off the lights.（不能换成no matter who）无论谁最后离开房间都应该关灯。
<3>Wherever did you go? （不能用No matter where）你究竟去哪里了？
是不是可以这么总结：
no matter -ever需要至少两个分句，所以只有一个句子的都用-ever。
