这两个词均表示“相信、一定、肯定”，可接of短语，不定式或从句，但意义略有不同。

sure表示“相信”但它仅仅是主观上的感觉，可能仍有些怀疑。而certain表示对某事确信无疑，非常肯定。

I’m certain that he’ll come to the party. He told me so on the phone an hour ago.

这里的certain不宜换成sure，因为所陈述内容是建立在明确的理由和不容置疑的根据之上的。

sure和certain后跟不定式与后跟of+动名词的意义不同。后接不定式表示局外人推测的口气即“相信”句中的主语会是怎样，后接of+doing则是当事人的口气，表示句中主语“相信”谓语陈述的内容。

He is sure of winning. 他自信会赢。

He is sure to win. （我相信）他肯定会赢。

sure后跟从句时，主语必须是人，主语若为it，只能用certain。当然certain也是人作主语。

It’s certain that two and two make four.

在祈使句中，常用sure，不用certain
