以“长元音+th”结尾的名词加上-s后，-th的读音由[θ]变为[ð]，如path [pɑːθ]→paths [pɑːðz], mouth等。
但以“短元音/辅音/辅音字母r+th”结尾的名词加上-s时，-th读音不变，词尾-s仍读[s]，如month [mʌnθ]→months [mʌnθs], Smith, birth等。
